Cocoon House - Sarasota Architectural Foundation Preservation Project 2018 Located on Bayou Louise Lane on Siesta Key, Cocoon House is a two-bedroom, one-bath, 760-square-foot cottage built as a guesthouse for Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Healy. The house gets its name from the technology used to build its roof: a polymer spray that Paul Rudolph saw being used at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on warships returning after WWII in order to "cocoon" or moth-ball them. Rudolph's creativity made him realize that this material could also be used in the construction industry. The Cocoon House was named “Best House Design of the Year” from the AIA in 1949; selected by MoMA New York in 1953 as one of 19 examples of houses built since WWII that were "pioneers of design;” and locally designated as a historic property by the City of Sarasota in 1985. Sarasota Architectural Foundation (SAF) educates, advocates, and celebrates on behalf of the Sarasota School of Architecture’s significant contributions to mid-century American architecture. Hiss Studio The iconic Hiss Studio, one of the most famous Sarasota School of Architecture homes, was featured in a 2014 Japanese architectural television series entitled "ONE X TIME" on BS-TBS, an affiliate of the Tokyo Broadcasting System. Narrator Toru Nakamura. Director Nazu Kikkawa, KZ Associates. Photographer Ken Goto. Hiss Studio will be on tour during SAF's fourth annual SarasotaMOD Weekend, November 10 – 12, 2017. The midcentury modern architecture festival is honoring Tim Seibert , FAIA, with tours, presentations, film screening, art exhibition and parties. Tickets are available at www.SarasotaMOD.com Hiss Studio was designed in 1953 by architect Edward J. "Tim" Seibert, FAIA, as a sales office for developer Philip Hiss. The house is located in Lido Shores, next door to Paul Rudolph’s equally famous Umbrella House. Designed as a glass box set on 14 slender steel columns, it was also one of the first air-conditioned buildings in Sarasota. Its crowning glory is its grand library, an enormous room which occupies most of the second floor. It has the original oak shelving that contained Hiss’ enormous library of art books, along with an original brass chandelier. The flooring is natural cork and the curving marble and steel stairway connects it to the ground floor. In 1962 architect Bert Brosmith designed a ground floor addition with four bedrooms and baths.

SAF Lecture: "Handle With Care" Presented by Dylan Turk, Crystal Bridges April 25, 2017 Dylan Turk, architecture curator, joined Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in 2015. Turk is a Little Rock, Arkansas native who earned his bachelor’s degree in History of Art and Architecture from the University of Arkansas. Turk curated “Building Crystal Bridges: Art, Architecture, Nature” a focused exhibition that debuted at the Museum in September, 2015. Building Crystal Bridges is the first exhibition to explore the story of Crystal Bridges’ evolution—from initial conversations, a sketch on a napkin, and the architectural genius of Moshe Safdie—to the cultural institution it has become today. This exhibition morphed into a publication, Art in Architecture, which was published in 2016. Turk lead the curatorial force behind Frank Lloyd Wright’s Bachman-Wilson House. As the complicated reconstruction of the house occurred, Turk researched Wright, the unique history of the Bachman-Wilson House, and the Modernist connections to the regions. Through the development of a diverse platform of interpretation, guests have opportunities to explore the prolific career, principles, and legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright. The Bachman-Wilson House opened to the public on November 11, 2015. Turk’s ongoing work at Crystal Bridges focuses on the collection, presentation, and scholarship of the collection, with an emphasis on the development of burgeoning architecture projects including the 2017 acquisition of Buckminster Fuller's Fly’s Eye Dome. SAF Lecture: "Evolution of Florida Modernism" Presented by Max Strang, FAIA March 8, 2017 SAF was honored to have award-winning architect Max Strang, FAIA give a presentation about how the Sarasota School of Architecture movement has influenced his body of work. As one of Florida’s pre-eminent practitioners of regional modernism, Strang has demonstrated that the optimistic spirit of the movement can indeed be advanced into a new era.This continuity of tradition and critical exploration have infused Strang’s projects across the state of Florida and the Caribbean. Max Strang is the founding principal of [STRANG], a Miami-based architecture firm acclaimed for its site-specific and climate-driven designs. Through his work and discourse, Strang has consistently underscored the ongoing relevance and importance of regional modernism to an international audience. In 2016, he was elected to the prestigious College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and in 2013 he received the Silver Medal from the Miami Chapter of the AIA, the highest honor the organization can bestow. Strang worked in London for the world-renowned Zaha Hadid and in New York for SHoP Architects. The architect of greatest influence, however, was Florida's Gene Leedy, an important member of the Sarasota School of Architecture. Strang was raised in a Leedy-designed home and later interned in Leedy's Winter Haven office. He graduated summa cum laude with a degree in architecture from the University of Florida and received a graduate degree from Columbia University. SarasotaMOD 2016 Victor Lundy Legacy Panel Discussion Architect Victor Lundy’s Legacy is the subject of the SarasotaMOD Weekend panel discussion moderated by Christopher Domin, co-author of “Paul Rudolph: The Florida Houses.” Domin guides panelists through an analysis of Lundy’s legacy and discovery of why the contemporary architecture community continues to embrace his work. Panelists include Joan Brierton, U.S. General Services Administration’s (GSA) Center for Historic Buildings; Donna Kacmar, FAIA, University of Houston; Frank Folsom Smith, FAIA, who worked for Lundy in the 1950s; and C. Ford Peatross, founder of the Library of Congress architecture archives. The third annual SarasotaMOD Midcentury Modern Architecture Festival honored Victor A. Lundy, FAIA, one of the founders of the Sarasota School of Architecture movement, November 11 - 13, 2016. Featuring a Lundy art exhibition and film screening, walking, house and trolley tours, cocktail parties and presentations. Lundy was awarded the first annual Art + Architecture Lifetime Achievement award by the Sarasota Architectural Foundation. The City of Sarasota officially proclaimed November 7 - 13, 2016 as Victor Lundy Week. SAF's Walker Guest House Replica This video demonstrates how the wall panels, weighted with 57 lb cannonballs, can easily be raised to bring the outdoors in and lowered to shield the sun and rain. The full-sized replica is on the grounds of The Ringling Museum, open daily with docent-led tours. Umbrella House Construction Completed The pool canopy of architect Paul Rudolph’s 1953 Umbrella House in Sarasota, Florida has been meticulously rebuilt, five decades after a series of storms destroyed the original. Following almost a year of engineering, planning and fabrication, the construction phase ran from October 1 to November 4, 2015. "Architectural Digest" described the Umbrella House as “one of the five most remarkable houses of the mid-twentieth century”.
